Harman Kardon Citation Twelve Restoration
This "parts amp" was given to me and I was inspired to bring it back to life.
“The Citation 12 was Harman Kardon's first big transistorized power amplifier. It was rated at 60 Watts per channel. It was based on a design published in the RCA Solid State Handbook.”
It used "computer grade components" which guaranteed "long, trouble free life."
“There is no DC fault protection, so a big fault in the output stage might put up to plus or minus 41.5 volts right onto the loudspeaker.” -This issue was presented in a shango066 youtube video: ruclips.net/video/Ef-LG5V6r1w/видео.html
Weighs 30 pounds, this is because “It used separate power transformers, bridge rectifiers, and filter caps for the left...

Kustom 100 Guitar Amplifier Repair
Просмотров 826Месяц назад
A story about a guitar amp. I borrowed this Kustom 100 around 2006 from a friend, and it broke while I was putting it to use. I took it to several repair shops, none of which were able to bring it back to life. I returned it back to the friend, still broken, several years later. Then in the Spring of 2024 I reached out to them and asked if I could get that amp and try to bring it back to life- ...

    Smart figuring out the grounding situation. I built a tube amp from scratch, with a push pull output, so it was pretty loud. Yet… I had hum, which was caused by grounding problems. Ground loops and just grounding schemes in general, can be tricky, to say the least. You’ll see a lot of guitar amps that use the all plastic input jacks, to isolate them from the chassis. For me it was one of those things I never thought about until it bit me right in the butt, while building that tube amp. Anyway… once again, I’m impressed by your ability to figure out issues as you read the schematics and go along. Changing the subject a bit, it is said the mojo is in the transformers… and you’ve got three there to play with. That could be fun! Also, you might study the components in the compressor section… and see if you can make adjustment to its parameters with some different components here and there. Just spitballing here. 🎛️😳 Thanks for the video!

      Thanks! I really get pumped with these projects because I can study the circuit design and learn new techniques/ gather ideas. I'm also learning from making mistakes along the way :) I used to ignore transformers, being able to generally identify them, but not really understanding how they worked. But once I wrapped my head around the core idea (wait, is that a transformer pun?) I realized they're pretty neat and started believing in their mojo potential. I did target the area on the schematic where the compressor was, and contemplated tweaking it down the road. However, the more I use this thing as a guitar amp, the more I kinda dig the compressor as it is! Dialing it up low, just up to a 1 or 2, lowers the overall output, but allows me to drive the input gain and get more breakup, without as much spikey dynamics. I really appreciate your comment, and thanks for watching!

    Rarely, especially in guitar circuits, are the transistor parameters tightly spec'd. The transistors of the day were probably +-50% or more on most of the parameters. Anything roughly equivalent should work, especially if the circuit is well designed.

    • @killertimes
      @killertimes 25 дней назад

      The more I dive into projects like these, the more I'm discovering that point. I'm also getting more familiar with the key specs (and what they mean) of transistors just by hunting for substitutes/equivalents. It's acutally kinda fun having 15-20+ tabs open at once and comparing datasheets, looking for the best choice. Thanks for watching and I appreciate the comment!

    The cover over the reverb can sag and droop low enough to touch the delay springs. I also used an LED substitute for the On lamp so it would never fail again. The reverb is always on unless you put a plug in the reverb jack. Or use the reverb foot switch if one is available. On the more powerful Kustoms the hiss is unacceptable. The orange gumdrops with the polarity indicated are electrolytics. And be sure the connections to the reverb tank are not over the transformer. John Fogerty had a love afair with these tuck and roll amps.

    • @killertimes
      @killertimes Месяц назад

      I could definitely see that stiff foam doing that. I really like the character of the this amps reverb, I kind of wish the tremolo came after the reverb though. The LED is a good idea. What do you think the hiss on those more powerful units was coming from? Bad caps? Aged transistors? I had a feeling some of those larger, orange caps were electrolytics. Everytime I look at this Kustom amp, theres a flash thought of Fogerty, and Creedance runs through my head.

    Can you post a link to where you found the serial number/date chart? I bought my K-100 bass amp in 1970 and had a tech replace the two-prong power cord with a three-prong grounded cord (I was getting buzzed when I touched the power switch).

But, I think that things have come sufficiently together with your knowledge and ability and, of course, the all important, all powerful, and mysterious "RUclips Algorithm" that it probably wont, and hopefully doesn't, take as long to put out another good one! Congrats! And I look forward to your future content!:)

    Unfortunately the realm of guitar amp repair is a very transient industry. Some of the work I've seen being done at a premium is bad enough to make your head spin. It's also plagued with many that possess a lot of valuable experience but are generally lacking in a fundamental understanding of what in the heck is actually going on from an electronics standpoint. You'd think it'd be the opposite case considering we have the internet to help us out these days but the signal to noise ratio on that information can be abysmal at times. There's great people that do it but there's a lot of goons out there as well (even on youtube) so trust but verify. Also, funny that one guy was trying to say that those BJT's were some kind of magical vintage unobtanium parts... In many cases a lot of these transistors are configured as such where their gain/special characteristics really aren't that important. You may have altered the characteristics of the input slightly with a newer transistor with different hfe/impedance but I mean come on... No ones going to notice or care and your result is WAY better than it not working at all. Putting that aside, good for you for figuring out the problem. You wound up falling back on some very essential electronics repair principles (thou shalt check voltages!) and some (not so) common sense. Great work and I'm looking forward to more videos :)

      Thank you very much! The internet, as a resource for learning about electronics, has provided me with so much useful knowledge. However, half the work is sifting through the quantity/ quality to find the info I’m looking for. I really value how much knowledge is being shared, especially here on youtube. Hearing and seeing things explained can really expedite the learning process, and I’ve been inspired to contribute in the same way. I just hope to not be, or rarely be one of those goons :)

    Just got one of these. The lo-Z hi-Z is tricky. I have two lo-Z transformers which I plan to run a broadcast phono preamp to since it outputs a 200ohms. I’m super glad that you posted this. Do you know how to get stereo out? I’m assuming that you need to run out from the Aux or tape boost.

    • @killertimes
      @killertimes Месяц назад

      I thought this piece of equipment was really interesting and I'm glad to share the project. I don't believe you can get stereo out of this unit though, all the outputs are just different options for mono. The TAPE/ OUTPUT (rca jack) comes from the middle of the circuit, after the compression and master level, but before the EQ stage. The TAPE/ BOOSTER (rca jack) is actually coming out of the output transformer and reflects all the stages of the circuit; compression, master level, and the EQ stage. If I wanted a line level output from this unit, I'd use the TAPE/ BOOSTER.

      Direct line from hyper intense pressure of kids’ commercials and peer pressure in the ‘80s and ‘90s to “gear pressure” in 2020s adulthood? 🤔 The ads might have died down because parents groups (or whoever) understandably pressured TV channels to provide more of a balance-more educational shows, less commercials-as-full-length-cartoons and ads designed to fool kids into thinking toys were much cooler than they often were. There’s a lot out there about why this stuff was especially intense in our youth, and it makes sense if it continues in different forms in adulthood and the larger culture, now that ‘80s and ‘90s kids are making a lot of entertainment (aka content). Although, I got Consumer Reports for Kids magazine as a kid, which somehow both made me think twice about ads, but which also recommended some crappy toys (were they paid off? Payola?) What the hell. 🙄😅

    Could you explain what's controlling what here please? I think the drumbrute is the master clock, going into the Voltaire, which is going into the monotron, and into the bitquest, but I'm not sure what the Dude is?

      The Drumbrute is the master clock, using either the metronome out / clock out. The drumbrute's Mix output is going in the DUDE, a battery powered, line level mixer by Bastl. The audio Output of the Voltaire is going into the Monotron, providing a filter + delay. The output of the monotron is going into the Bitquest for additional fx. Then the signal leaves the bitquest and into the DUDE. The Dude's output is going into a battery powered guitar amp.

    Wicked stuff. I like the experimental nature of these tunes and the beat.
